COMMENTS on business rates made by a West Yorkshire MP have been “given extra context” on a social media post.
Andrea Jenkyns, Conservative MP for Morley and Outwood, raised the issue of business rates in a recent House of Commons session.
She asked what “bold measures” the Government was taking to “counter the oppressive weight of sky rocketing business rates imposed by Labour-led Leeds City Council - the worst rated council in the country for financial management.”
The MP later Tweeted details of the exchange, along with a video of her Commons question on X, formerly known as Twitter.
But a “community note” was added to her post, giving readers “added context they might want to know” about her comments.
The note said: “While District Councils (such as Leeds City Council) collect business rates, they do not set those rates.
“Business rates are set by the national Government.”
It then includes several links to websites detailing how Government sets business rates.
